No one has heard from aspiring researcher Dr. Louise Forget since last week, when she approached some of her study team about data fabrication and her concerns about the impact on their grant, the patent application and their reputations. Detective Inspector Nell James didn't hold out much hope for Louise’s safe return.

The grim confirmation comes when Dr. Martin Hilleman is summoned to a secluded park on the banks of the St. Lawrence River to examine an immersed, rotting corpse. Eager to work with Nell and her partner Vince Camillo again, Martin provides the case's biggest break: Louise didn't just drown—she was poisoned - with Aconite. The toxic plant is traced back to the lab of one of her supervisors, the charming Dr. Leo Durante, where the entire team had easy access.

With the help of Louise's fledgling research assistant, Nell and Vince wade through a sordid web of treachery, fraud, and murder. But Louise's personal demons, a custody battle with Louise's ex-husband, and a secret fiancé cloud the investigation.

When another of Dr. Forget's Fibromyalgia study team gets murdered on Halstone grounds, Vince's crusty former partner, still with the regional police, is tagged to lead that investigation. Now they must find a way to work together, to solve both murders and prevent further deaths.
